Judge Hunter will not be able to meet with us on Jan 9 but will be with us on Feb 6.
Instead, we will meet with the Gretna Historical Society to hear the presentation of the New Orleans Bicentennial Commemoration of Lafayette’s visit to New Orleans by John Scurich, the coordinator and chair. The events will take place April 9-13 in New Orleans.
The Gretna Historical Society meets in the gym of the St. Joseph School at 610 6th Street, Gretna, La. (The gym is behind the church/school). There is a $5 entrance fee.
Background: In 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette (the last surviving major general of the American Revolution) made a grand tour of 24 states and stopped in New Orleans. The 2025 Bicentennial Celebration marks this historic event.
Lafayette served under George Washington and then returned to France where he with Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (a precursor to the Declaration of Independence). He was invited by President James Monroe in 1824 to tour the United States to instill the “Spirit of 1776” in the hearts of the citizens again.
John will provide details on all of the celebrations.
