Algiers updates from CM King:

• The old Rite Aid on Gen. DeGaulle, next to Chase Bank is being demolished to make way for Bank of America. The former dentist office, on the other side of Chase Bank is being renovated and will be a new credit union. That makes three financial institutions within a block of each other on Gen. DeGaulle. Chase and BOA are the two largest banks in the United States, and they both have chosen Algiers.
• The demolition of DeGaulle Manor has resumed. The owner filed bankruptcy in Miami to stop the demolition. The judge ruled in the city’s favor and allowed the demolition to continue.
• The restaurants at the intersection of DeGaulle and Wall are under new ownership and management. Ms. Laverne Toombs, Executive Director of AEDF, and I had an opportunity to meet the new owners, and walk through the restaurants. The owner plans to open soon, and is currently hiring.
• DOTD is in the process of installing a traffic light at the intersection of Wall and DeGaulle. The construction process will take a few months.
• The blighted Oakmont apartments on Westbend, are being demolished/renovated. Our office has been in communication with the owner and, Saftey and Permits, making sure the permit process is moving smoothly.
• The new splash pad at the Cutoff Rec Center officially opened. Dozens of people were on hand to participate in the ribbon cutting.
