SUMMARY:April 13 - Monthly Speaker Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our new meeting location and time.  We are now meeting at 4th District NOPD Headquarters at 3320 Wall Boulevard\, Algiers from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on the second Monday of the month.  Please put us in your calendar. \nOn April 13\, our speaker is Rafael Goyeneche of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. \nRafael is the President of the Metropolitan Crime Commission which has been tracking crime in our area for decades and is the most comprehensive source for crime statistics in our city. \nHopefully\, Rafael will tell us the tale of Dax\, a canine police dog who was instrumental in an unsual way in bringing some suspects into custody recently.  Dax is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix and a certified narcotics and apprehension K9 trained to assist Troopers in locating individuals and evidence while helping bring incidents to a quick resolution. \nIf you missed our March meeting\, our speaker was a Civil War historian James Larkin who researched the Union occupation of Huntlee Village during the Civil War.  It was a fascinating talk\, and we will invite him back again soon so more can hear about the marvelous history of our area.

SUMMARY:Feb 5 - Guest Speaker Judge Simone Levine
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome Judge Simone Levine of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. \n \nJudge Simone Levine\, who presides over Section A of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court\, is focusing on a trauma-informed approach to justice\, one that centers empathy\, safety and trust. \nWDSU Investigates got an exclusive look inside her courtroom\, where traditional practices are being reimagined to better serve victims\, defendants\, and the community at large. \nOne of the most visible changes is the courtroom’s dedicated victim room\, a private\, quiet space where survivors can participate in proceedings without being forced to sit among the general audience. \n“So this is so important as victims can feel the degree of safety\,” Judge Levine explained. “Testifying is even more traumatic sometimes than the crime itself.” \nWe meet in the Choir Room of Connect Church\, 1110 Kabel Drive\, Algiers\, from 6-8 pm.  The doors open at 6 pm\, and the program begins at 6:30 pm. Bring your friends and neighbors. \nNEWS FLASH!!\nBeginning April 13\, we will meet on the second Monday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the 4th District Headquarters on 3320 Wall Blvd\, Algiers.

SUMMARY:Aug 7 - Monthly Meeting with Mayoral Candidates Ricky Twiggs\, Arthur Hunter\, and Eileen Carter
DESCRIPTION:Ricky Twiggs hails from Algiers and is running for Mayor as an Independent. \nHailing from the vibrant and culturally rich city of New Orleans\, LA (Algiers specifically)\, Ricky Twiggs Jr. is not your typical political figure. With a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Holy Cross\, Ricky has established himself as an award-winning psychotherapist. His private practice\, dedicated to empowering teens to take charge of their lives\, reflects his deep commitment to mental health and community wellbeing. Ricky has been featured in Women’s Health and AskMen for his contributions to mental health\, underscoring his expertise and dedication in the field. He has also been an advocate of change in how we approach mental health reform\, crime reform\, corruption and infrastructure. \nJudge Arthur Hunter has declared he is running for mayor.  Judge Arthur Hunter isn’t a career politician. He’s a former New Orleans police officer\, lawyer\, and judge who has dedicated his life to protecting our communities and fixing our broken systems. He is stepping up to lead our city into the next chapter\, because New Orleans deserves to be safer\, stronger\, richer\, and an economic driver for the state of Louisiana. \nArthur Hunter grew up in New Orleans East\, in a neighborhood known as the Gap. His father owned Delta Super Market between the Desireand Florida Housing Projects\, and his mother worked part-time at the Robert Hall Department Store on Old Gentilly Road. \nHe attended St. Augustine High School\, where he played on the undefeated state football championship team coached by the legendary Otis Washington. After high school\, Hunter went to the University of Michigan\, where he played football as a walk-on until a knee surgery ended his athletic career. He returned home to graduate from Loyola University with a degree in Political Science. \n \nNew Orleans is at a pivotal point. It will take a unifier\, a native\, a decisive decision maker and someone who is willing to speak truth to power and work WITH residents to move New Orleans forward. We must all work together. \n I grew up in New Orleans when we were a family of neighborhoods. We can revive our city together by building a table where all New Orleanians have a seat. This will take a community lift with a visionary at the helm. \n I am that person. \nOur city has been through too much division and its time for us to thrive\, not just survive. I’m over being resilient; it’s time for New Orleans to WIN!
