SUMMARY:Apr 3 - Monthly Speaker Meeting with Michelle Woodfork
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on April 3 for our monthly meeting.  Our speaker is Orleans Parish Sheriff Candidate Michelle Woodfork.  Ms. Woodfork was the interim police chief and currently works in the Invetigation Division of the DA’s office. \n \nWe meet in the choir room at Connect Church\, 1110 Kabel Drive\, Algiers\, from 6-8.  Doors open at 6.  The program begins at 6:30\, and we end promptly at 8 though many of you stay afterward to visit. \nMichelle’s resume: \nMichelle Woodfork is a proven leader\, crime-fighter\, and trailblazer with more than 33 years in law enforcement. A proud New Orleanian and lifelong resident of New Orleans East\, she has dedicated her career to making the city safer through innovative policing\, strategic reforms\, and a deep commitment to public service. \nIn 2022\, Woodfork made history as the first female Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department\, leading the force through a pivotal era of transformation. Under her leadership\, violent crime dropped by 25%\, murders declined by 23%\, and carjackings plummeted by 45%. She prioritized recruitment and retention\, hiring 104 new police recruits—three times more than the previous year—along with 107 civilian professionals\, revitalizing the department’s ranks. She also launched community engagement initiatives like the Junior Citizens Academy for youth mentorship and a summer basketball league\, strengthening relationships between officers and the community. \nWoodfork also played a critical role in NOPD’s federal consent decree compliance\, implementing policies and reforms that pushed the department closer to its goal of full compliance. Her tenure left a lasting impact\, modernizing the department’s approach to policing while restoring trust and accountability. \nAfter retiring from NOPD in 2024\, Woodfork took on a new challenge\, accepting an appointment as Director of Forensics and Intelligence for the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office. In this role\, she leads the Open Source Intelligence Task Force\, revolutionizing the way law enforcement and prosecutors collaborate by leveraging forensic analysis and intelligence data to strengthen cases from arrest to indictment to trial. \nA graduate of St. Mary’s Academy and Southern University at New Orleans\, Woodfork holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Criminal Justice and is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. She has earned numerous commendations throughout her career\, including the Purple Heart Letter Award in 2017. Michelle is a proud mother to her son Nick. \nWith an unwavering commitment to justice\, Michelle Woodfork continues to fight for a safer\, stronger New Orleans\, ensuring that her city’s future is brighter than ever.

SUMMARY:Jan 9 - Venue Change and Event Change
DESCRIPTION:  \nJudge Hunter will not be able to meet with us on Jan 9 but will be with us on Feb 6. \nInstead\, we will meet with the Gretna Historical Society to hear the presentation of the New Orleans Bicentennial Commemoration of Lafayette’s visit to New Orleans by John Scurich\, the coordinator and chair. The events will take place April 9-13 in New Orleans. \nThe Gretna Historical Society meets in the gym of the St. Joseph School at 610 6th Street\, Gretna\, La.  (The gym is behind the church/school). There is a $5 entrance fee. \nBackground:  In 1824\, the Marquis de Lafayette (the last surviving major general of the American Revolution) made a grand tour of 24 states and stopped in New Orleans.  The 2025 Bicentennial Celebration marks this historic event. \nLafayette served under George Washington and then returned to France where he with Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (a precursor to the Declaration of Independence).  He was invited by President James Monroe in 1824 to tour the United States to instill the “Spirit of 1776” in the hearts of the citizens again. \nJohn will provide details on all of the celebrations. \nDigital Brochure and Purchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Dec 30 - Next City Council Hearing on Lower Coast Algiers Zoning
DESCRIPTION:Support our fellow neighborhood association on Jan 9 at the City Council Chambers at 10 am.  Lower Coast Algiers wishes to be zoned single family\, rural. \n The following is from Lee Dupont of the Lower Coast Algiers Association.   \nThere are two important things that need to be done: \n1) Show up Dec 30\, 10 am at City Hall Council Chambers and support Councilmember King’s motion. This will be a very short meeting as we are #1 on the agenda.  There are only 2 things on the agenda. \n2) Have everyone in you household send in online comments supporting Item 1 on the agenda.  You do not need to live in Lower Coast Algiers to send in comments. So you can also get interested friends and family to send in online comments. MORE COMMENTS OF SUPPORT IS BETTER.  \n\n\nSubmit comments and see agenda:  https://council.nola.gov/meetings/2024/20241230-regular-meeting/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND\nThe Dec 30th meeting at 10 am is the Final FLUM (Master Plan) vote this finalizes the FLUM efforts begun in 2022\, and guides all of the Zoning in Lower Coast Algiers to Single Family. This MUST be completed before the actual zoning can be voted on in January. \nYou can read the history of the motion by going to the link above and reviewing the agenda with attachments\, then reading the reports. The Zoning vote is January (Jan 9?) and February will also be critical and we will advise you on them later. \n\n\nJan.  Zoning Ordinance vote (motion to create ordinance) \n\n\n\n\nFeb.  Final Zoning vote  final vote on ordinance.  \n\n\nThanks for all of your support along the way. \nWe can’t slow down just yet. We are in the finish stretch now.

SUMMARY:Sat\, Nov 16 - Algiers Historical Society - History of Algiers Fire Companies
DESCRIPTION:Pelican\, Brooklyn\, Washington\, & Morgan: The History of the Algiers Fire Companies\n\nPresenter: Nikki CARUSO\n\nPrior to its annexation by the City of New Orleans in 1870\, Algiers was an independent town with its own fire department dating back to 1851. The original Algiers Fire Department companies were Pelican No. 1\, Brooklyn No. 2\, Morgan No. 3\, and Washington Hook & Ladder No. 1. Like the companies in New Orleans\, they formed their own Firemen’s Charitable Association\, held parades\, and reflected the communities in which they served. This talk will cover the histories of those companies\, their role in battling the Great Algiers Fire of 1895\, the evolution of their fire stations\, and what the companies of the 8th Fire District look like today.\n\nAs the daughter of a retired New Orleans Fire Department Captain\, Nikki CARUSO grew up hearing stories about the fire department and visiting fire houses around the city. In 2020 – inspired by her dad’s hunt for the location of the original Engine 1 – she began to research the histories of 19th and 20th century fire stations throughout New Orleans. To share her discoveries\, Nikki created the Instagram account “Crescent City Stations.” She’s presented on Fire Department History at the Deutsches Haus; for Learning Before Lunch at UNO; Gretna’s German-American Cultural Center; and in conjunction with the City Archives\, at the New Orleans Public Library.\n\nNikki has a BA in Theatre from Appalachian State University\, a Master of Arts in American Dance Studies from Florida State University\, and is currently working on her Masters of Library Information Science at LSU. While at Florida State\, she studied parading traditions in New Orleans and worked as a research assistant for the book “New Orleans Carnival Balls: The Secret Side of Mardi Gras.”\n\nLocation: Algiers Regional Library\, 3014 Holiday Dr.\, in Algiers. Library phone: 504-596-2641. First floor\, large meeting room.\n\n\nAHS meetings\, at the library\, are free and open to the public and media. Also\, they are not affiliated with or endorsed by the New Orleans Public Library.

SUMMARY:Tues - Nov 12 - Renaming General Meyer and Rezoning Lower Coast Algiers - City Planning Commission Meeting at City Hall
DESCRIPTION:1PM – Renaming General Meyer: \nOn Tuesday\, November 12\, at 1pm\, in the City Council Chambers\, the City Planning Commission will consider renaming General Meyer Avenue (from Behrman Avenue to Sullen Drive) to Dr. Rudy Lombard Avenue.  They will also consider renaming General Meyer Avenue (from Sullen Drive to Bennett Street) to Taza Green Avenue.  This matter is on track for consideration by the Council as early as December 5th. \n1:30PM – Rezoning Lower Coast Algiers: \nLet’s support a fellow neighborhood–we may need them in the future.   \nfrom the Lower Coast Algiers Association:\nThis is the first step to change the zoning in Lower Coast to all single family.  This is our opportunity to support the zoning changes which would become permanent.     \nBACKGROUND – Councilman King has returned the Future Land Use Map (FLUM) map requests to CPC so that they would have an opportunity to revise them to agree with the requested zoning changes. Additionally\, he is proposing to change all of the zoning to single family at this meeting. Lower Coast Algiers is not capable of supporting high density development without vast sums of money for unfunded infrastructure. A study clearly supports our efforts to educate the city of the lack of infrastructure in Lower Coast Algiers. \nLink to LCA Impact Study: Lower Coast Algiers Impact Study \n**A LARGE TURNOUT IS IMPORTANT – NUMBERS COUNT LET’S ALL BE THERE**
